Option #1.
Artist Report.
Source: ArtAxis.org
Assignment:
Select an artist from the website Artaxis.org. This artist should be working in wheel thrown forms (pottery). There are a lot of artists listed alphabetically. Please make sure you use the link in the upper left hand of the artaxis.org page to search the site. Explore many artists and find one you are very much interested in. After studying the artists work on ArtAxis search out your selected artist on the web trying to find their website, exhibitions or anything else they are doing. Artaxis.org is a great site but it has limited space for each artists. You need to search and find more information on your artists of choice. Find out all you can and get an compete picture of the artist, their work and processes.
After completing your research write a paper about your artist. This report should be about 1-2 written pages along with images and take you approximately 3 hours to complete both research and writing. Really figure out the artist and their work so you can have a discussion about the artist. Included in this written report I would like you to include a sample of the artists work to view( 2-5 images). These images should factor into your report.
Tips/Pointer/Help
When righting this report frame it like a conversation you might have with someone. Tell me why you selected the artists? What did you discover about the artists that you didn't expect to find? What are you attracted to in their art work. What would you ask the artist about if you had a face to face interview (really...what would you like to know after researching them). Would you personally want some of the artists work, and why? How much does the artists work cost? Can you buy it, if so where? Are they on Artsy.com ? What gallery does the artist show their work? Does this artist inspire you to make work yourself?
Submission:
Please turn your work in via canvas. You can either write it direct on Canvas or submit it as a word file upload on Canvas. Do not send this assignment to my campus email, it is only accepted via Canvas under the Written Assingment #1

Option #2.
Next Steps

Assignment:
For this written assignment you'll be asked to do research on the possible next steps in your art education. This project is specifically directed towards students who are interested in attending an art program to receive a degree in the arts. Selecting an art program is an important undertaking when it comes to ones art education. Almost every school has an art program, but not all programs are equal. There are great programs, good programs and I must say, there are bad programs. While this is not a comment on any specific instructor or university, there are programs that are better than others as well as programs that better meet the specific needs some students where other programs do not. Selecting the right program is essential and should be high on your priority lists if you plan on or want to attend art school.
On this website I have a long list of Ceramic Art Programs that I believe are solid and tested. There are many programs that are not on the list. This is just my personal short list of high quality programs. While these are listed for their Ceramics Programs, they do also have other Art Focuses such as Painting, Drawing, Sculpture along with Digital Media Fiber Arts and Jewlery Smithing. I would like you as part of this written project to research some University Art Programs. In doing research you should look at a number of factors, Location, Funding, Grants, Faculty, and Facility. Where is it located? Is it in an area that is close to Art Activities ( LA, NY, Chicago)? Does the program have scholarship money, fellowships or grants for students in the Arts, and if so how do you apply? Who teaches there? Its important in my opinion to work with faculty that are current and up to date on the trends in the area of studio practice you wish to study. Who are these faculty, what kind of work do they make, what galleries do they show with? What is that facility like? The facility is going to be the studios, campus galleries, work spaces for BFA (bachelors of Fine Art) , MFA (masters of Fine Art), and equipment needed to make your work.
In this written project you will research and select two programs you would like to apply to for the next Academic year. Write and explain why you have chosen these to programs. Was it the Facility, Studio, etc.. Who are the Faculty, what kind of work t=do they make and is their work directly interesting to you as a understudy? Please write two separate 1 Page reports on each of your 2 selected University programs outlining why you feel they are the best for you. Please include the names of the faculty in the area of study you would like to be part of. Possibly include images from the programs facility, Faculty Art work or any other visuals you feel important to explaining your interest.
Tips/Pointers/Help
I would encourage you to look at the financial cost of the school. How much does it cost to attend and live in the ares. Some times schools are in areas that are VERY expensive to live and vice versa. This is something you should consider. The cheaper the cost the more time you get in the studio. The more expensive the more you must pay or work, which keeps you out of the studio and away from making art.

Hands On Clay Projects:
Hands On Assignment #1 Hand Built Bowls:
For this assignment I'm asking everyone to complete 3 hand built bowls using the coil method demonstrated in the Zoom demo. The bowls should be of a medium scale not exceeding 8" in diameter. the building technique is simple and straight forward, coil, stack and pinch to form. In this assignment the technique is not the biggest challenge. The big challenge it to see what you can come up with using the coil method.
Objects:
3 hand built bowls not larger than 8" in diameter
Techniques:
Coil and pinch will be the method of construction for this project. Build using coils that about 3/8 - 1/2" in thickness. Use small amount of moisture on the surface when you join coils to clay. Use water minimally. Excessive water makes the clay slippery and hard to join to as well as causing the bowls to become weak and fall apart.
Forms:
Explore forms and make something that pleases you visually as well as addresses you purpose for the bowls. Purposes can be decorative, or meant for visual beauty alone. The bowls could also be designed for utilitarian purposes or in other words be designed to be used for food or some specific task. You have the freedom to choose and explore in a direction of your choice. You can mix it up and explore both directs, you choose. Push your forms and make things that you have pride and investment of time in. Do not rush and do not make work you could care less about. The more you invest in the time the better the work will be.
Deadline:
Your bowls are due on April 6th. Please take images and upload them to Canvas. If you do not know how to do this figure it out. Do not wait till the due date to figure out how to upload an image. Contact the tutorial center on Campus. They are offering assistance during this time. You can also contact the IT department in the Library as well. There are many resources you can find on the web that will walk you through this process. Search and solve
Resources:
Please search out and study the work of Sunshine Cobb. You can find her online and on Instagram where she has many works, videos and other things that will influence you in this projects.
