Option #1.
Artist Report.
Source: ArtAxis.org
Assignment:
Select an artist from the website Artaxis.org. This artist should be working in sculptural forms. There are a lot of artists listed alphabetically. Please make sure you use the link in the upper left hand of the artaxis.org page to search the site. Explore many artists and find one you are very much interested in. After studying the artists work on ArtAxis search out your selected artist on the web trying to find their website, exhibitions or anything else they are doing. Artaxis.org is a great site but it has limited space for each artists. You need to search and find more information on your artists of choice. Find out all you can and get an compete picture of the artist, their work and processes.
After completing your research write a paper about your artist. This report should be about 1-2 written pages along with images and take you approximately 3 hours to complete both research and writing. Really figure out the artist and their work so you can have a discussion about the artist. Included in this written report I would like you to include a sample of the artists work to view( 2-5 images). These images should factor into your report.
Tips/Pointer/Help
When righting this report frame it like a conversation you might have with someone. Tell me why you selected the artists? What did you discover about the artists that you didn't expect to find? What are you attracted to in their art work. What would you ask the artist about if you had a face to face interview (really...what would you like to know after researching them). Would you personally want some of the artists work, and why? How much does the artists work cost? Can you buy it, if so where? Are they on Artsy.com ? What gallery does the artist show their work? Does this artist inspire you to make work yourself?

Assignment:
For this written assignment you'll be asked to do research on the possible next steps in your art education. This project is specifically directed towards students who are interested in attending an art program to receive a degree in the arts. Selecting an art program is an important undertaking when it comes to ones art education. Almost every school has an art program, but not all programs are equal. There are great programs, good programs and I must say, there are bad programs. While this is not a comment on any specific instructor or university, there are programs that are better than others as well as programs that better meet the specific needs some students where other programs do not. Selecting the right program is essential and should be high on your priority lists if you plan on or want to attend art school.
On this website I have a long list of Ceramic Art Programs that I believe are solid and tested. There are many programs that are not on the list. This is just my personal short list of high quality programs. While these are listed for their Ceramics Programs, they do also have other Art Focuses such as Painting, Drawing, Sculpture along with Digital Media Fiber Arts and Jewlery Smithing. I would like you as part of this written project to research some University Art Programs. In doing research you should look at a number of factors, Location, Funding, Grants, Faculty, and Facility. Where is it located? Is it in an area that is close to Art Activities ( LA, NY, Chicago)? Does the program have scholarship money, fellowships or grants for students in the Arts, and if so how do you apply? Who teaches there? Its important in my opinion to work with faculty that are current and up to date on the trends in the area of studio practice you wish to study. Who are these faculty, what kind of work do they make, what galleries do they show with? What is that facility like? The facility is going to be the studios, campus galleries, work spaces for BFA (bachelors of Fine Art) , MFA (masters of Fine Art), and equipment needed to make your work.
In this written project you will research and select two programs you would like to apply to for the next Academic year. Write and explain why you have chosen these to programs. Was it the Facility, Studio, etc.. Who are the Faculty, what kind of work t=do they make and is their work directly interesting to you as a understudy? Please write two separate 1 Page reports on each of your 2 selected University programs outlining why you feel they are the best for you. Please include the names of the faculty in the area of study you would like to be part of. Possibly include images from the programs facility, Faculty Art work or any other visuals you feel important to explaining your interest.
Tips/Pointers/Help
I would encourage you to look at the financial cost of the school. How much does it cost to attend and live in the ares. Some times schools are in areas that are VERY expensive to live and vice versa. This is something you should consider. The cheaper the cost the more time you get in the studio. The more expensive the more you must pay or work, which keeps you out of the studio and away from making art.

Hands On Clay Assignments:
Assignment #1: Clay-mation
For the first at home ceramics assignment of the COVID-19 shut down we will be revisiting Clay-mation. While we briefly visited this concept in a two hour in class project, this time around I like us to dig a little deeper. Please understand we are working within the limits set upon us in this unplanned new reality. We need to make the best of things and do hat we can to keep pushing forward. With this in mind I thought Clay-mation was the perfect solution. It requires no kilns for firing, can be documented with you camera and its product is perfect for distribution on digital platforms. And to top things off you all have some experience in it already. SO lets see what we can com up with.
Requirements:
Each student is required to produce a clay-mation video that lasts approximately 3 minutes. This is not an easy task and will require a good deal of thought and planning on your part. Each students film will require a narrative content. In other words tell everyone a story. The subject of this narrative is up to you. You tell the story you want, but tell a story, not just a simple video of you mushing a ball of clay. I want more, I expect more. I expect there to be a sound element to this video, but the sound must be of your own. You can incorporate your own voice, you can create music using apps like Garage Band on you iPhone, but you must be the creator of the entire creative content of this piece. Listed below is a broken down list of requirements that I expect to be included in your clay-mation video
narrative
[ nar-uh-tiv ]SHOW IPA
SEE SYNONYMS FOR narrative ON THESAURUS.COM
noun
a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious.
Required elements:
Title screen to your video
Content that communicates a story
3 minutes of Clay-mation video ( this does not mean you can use three frames each for one minute)
Clay-mation means the action and movement will be made through the modeling of clay. You can have non-clay sets.
All audio content must be original (created by you or your voice)
Credits at the end of the film that lists the content and content creator, titles of songs, voice over characters etc..
Creation of a your own YouTube account where you will post this video for the class the review.
Email me a link to your finished video that is posted to your YouTube account Sunday Night April 5th by 8:00PM. I will be down loading and prepping for our Zoom Critique.
All students are required to participate in the Zoom Critique. While in the Zoom Critique each students is required to have their microphones and video enables so we can see and hear you as you present you video.
Technical suggestions:
This project will require a good deal of thinking and preparation. Therefore I suggest the following:
1. Conceptualize your story and create your characters. I would encourage you to sped a few days constructing your characters. Once created keep them moist and movable buy storing them in an air tight bag or container plastic container. You'll need them to be ready to move bend and model.
2. Create a stage where this movie will take place. This production will probably take a while to build and animate, so choose a place that can be free of change or need to move. I suggest a work board or desktop, or whatever you can think of to meet you creative needs.
3. You also should create a camera mount of some sort. Remember when we did this in class we used a ball of clay. I would suggest doing something similar again. Perhaps putting a ball of clay in a plastic bag so you can keep it moist and keep your phone clean.
4. Use an app that makes this whole process easy. I'm using the app called Life Lapse. I have paid for the pro service that costs $7:00 a month. You are no required to purchase the App for use, but I have found it to be very easy and simple. The free version is very good as well but lacks some of the more interesting features.
5. I would encourage you to create portions of you video and process it. Save it on your phone and or transfer to your laptop. My plan is to make small scenes using Life Lapse and then doing final editing in my iMovie app. Explore the possibilities. Do not try to shoot it all at once and expect there to be no technical glitches with the app or software. Short scenes that can be saved and later edited together may save you a lot of trouble and reworking of the project.
6. Consider your lighting. If you plan to shoot multiple days make sure the lighting is good and similar. I wouldn't shoot at night and then at day. Unless you wanting an evening scene I guess, but try to keep things similar in lighting to create a smooth 3 minute clay-mation movie.
7. Play with your audio apps like garage band to create an original soundtrack. This is not a difficult task and will allow you to have creative control of all aspects of this production.
8. Search the web for examples of clay-mation to help you understand the concepts needed to create a dialog and narrative in your own story. Ideas are rarely created without a response to something. Look for inspiration, ideas to follow and concepts that speak to you. Use these inspirational sources to come up with your own unique spin on them or create something entirely new.
9. Do not wait to do this project. Start now! Open a YouTube account now. Post a simple video and learn how to post. Learn how to share the video by emailing links. Get comfortable before you need to use it so when you need to you will be able to.
