Beginning Ceramic Vocabulary:
Coil: A solid rope/strand of clay.
Slab: A flat sheet of clay.
Wedge: The technique of working clay into a uniform and dense mass.
Glaze: A mixture of powdered minerals suspended in water, which when applied to ceramic and heated melt to create a glass coating.
Slip: A liquid mixture of clay.
Kiln: A gas or electric powered furnace used to heat “fire” ceramics.
Firing: The process of heating ceramic to fuse it into a solid non dissolvable material.
Green Ware: Ceramic that has not been fired. In this state the clay can de dissolved by water.
Bisque Ware: Ceramic that has been fired once to a low temperature to partially fuse it making it strong enough to be handled and glazed without breaking.
Glaze Ware: Ceramic that has been glazed and fired to fuse the glaze to the ceramic.
Pyrometric Cone: A clay object that has been specifically formulated to melt a specific temperature. Cones are used to reference and measure the firing temperature.
